A year ago, on 13 September, we lost Dirtopia founder Meurant Botha and his longtime friend JP van Zyl.

On Sunday 13 September we'd like to remember them in a way we think they would have appreciated: on mountain bikes, riding singletrack, followed by beers, boerie, a fire and plenty of stories.

Meurant and JP shared a friendship spanning about three decades and a lifelong passion for mountain biking. Between them they left an enormous footprint on the sport – through trails, events, bike shops, races and, most importantly, the people they met along the way.

We'll ride from the Dirtopia Trail Centre at Muratie to NeverSayNeverEndingAgain, one of Meurant's signature trails and a route he and JP rode together many times.

This isn't meant to be a formal memorial ride. It's a social ride and a celebration of bikes, trails, friendship and two lives very well lived.

Come ride, have a laugh, share a story – and feel free to bring or wear a beard, real or otherwise!

We roll from 08h30 from Dirtopia Trail Centre, Muratie

R100 per rider
Includes:

• Dirtopia day permit
• One beer
• One boerewors roll

A Dirtopia day permit normally costs R100 on its own.

Winelands Regional Permit holders: R50
Includes a beer & boerie.

We'll get the fire going after the ride, so stay for a beer and some stories.

THE RIDE

The main social ride heads out at 08h30 for approximately 2 to 2½ hours, covering around 22–27km, depending on which trail options you choose along the way.

We'll ride towards NeverSayNeverEndingAgain, one of Meurant's signature trails and one he and JP rode together many times.

The trails are well marked, with options at various intersections to go shorter or add some extra blue or black singletrack. The guided ride is aimed at intermediate+ mountain bikers, and e-bikes are very welcome.

Still have some miles in the legs afterwards? Add the Knorhoek loop and turn the morning into roughly 40km of trail riding.

Prefer something shorter or more relaxed?
Beginner, novice and less-fit riders are welcome too. Follow the marked Green ABC Route from the Trail Centre and choose either the 6.4km or 8.2km option at your own pace.

NOT RIDING? COME ANYWAY.

Meurant and JP shared a love for more than just bikes – cars were a pretty big part of the picture too!

Their car friends, family and anyone who simply wants to be part of the day are very welcome to join us afterwards for a beer, boerie, fire and a few stories at the Dirtopia Trail Centre. The 3.5km hiking trail is open too if you prefer a walk. The views are magnificent!

We’ll probably extend the day with the excellent wine from the farm… Muratie Wine Tasting & Sales are open all day and if you prefer a sit-down meal, book via Dineplan on Muratie’s website.

 Buffalo rides:

NO booking = no boerie or beer. You'll still pay for guiding & permit on the day! (Regional permits half price if you take boerie & beer or not!)

 Depending on what we ride, around 12km to 25km of proper MTBing, so riders must be capable i.e. singletrack riders. (intermediate +)  Ebikes are welcome. NOT for novices / children.
