Experience a magical evening hike at Muratie Wine Estate, where the sunset meets the rising full moon! Bring along a picnic and enjoy breathtaking views with a glass of Muratie’s award-winning wine. After sunset, continue the adventure as the trail winds back through the forest, illuminated by your headlamp under the full moon.
The new circular route takes hikers through the estate vineyards is about 1.63km up and 1.68km down = 3.3km in total. It takes 20 to 45 minutes to the look-out going up, depending on your pace of course. Plan your arrival from 5.45pm at the Trail Centre, but no later than 6.45pm.
The marked route leads to a lookout point, where you can marvel at views of Simonsberg, the Winelands, and even Table Mountain. Here, you can buy four Muratie wines from the MCC, Dry Rose, Sauvignon Blanc or the Melck’s Dry Red blend.
After sunset & moonrise (by 19h40), it only takes about 20 to 30 minutes back to Dirtopia Trail Centre.
What to Bring:
- A backpack with your own food/picnic and blanket for the lookout point.
- Jacket/sweater for after dark.
- A torch or headlamp.
- Good walking or hiking shoes for varied terrain.
What to Expect:
- Muratie wines by the glass or bottle is available at the look-out.
- Snacks like chips & energy bars and cooldrinks are on sale at the Trail Centre, where you’ll also collect your permit on arrival.
- A lucky draw for a FALKE sock hamper – pop into the shop after the hike to see if you are the winner!
Schedule:
- Arrival: From 17:45 (latest start: 18:45).
- Latest descent from the lookout: 19:50.
- Return to Trail Centre: 20:00–20:30, depending on your pace.

Dirtopia Trail Centre on Muratie sells permits for this trail network to mountain bikers, trail runners and hikers.
The shop offers trail essentials as well as snacks and cold drinks.

Latest time to start hiking back 20h00
- Bring a picnic blanket and a torch plus good (closed) walking shoes and a jacket (something warm after dark)
- Total distance of circular route 2km on a steep vineyard road
- NO SMOKING OR FIRES (which includes the use of gas stoves) on the mountain.
- Leave no trace - DO NOT LITTER.
- Return wine glasses to the wine stand please.
- Alcohol to be consumed in a responsible manner.
- Stay on hiking trail marked with blue footprints – do NOT follow bike paths.
- Remember not to leave valuables in your vehicle.
- For safety – do not get separated from a group.
